The finish is a thing of carefully orchestrated beauty. The homey essence of nutmeg permeates the taste, but Our Special Ale also delivers both sweet and roasted malt flavors. I have never been a huge proponent of brewing ingredients other than barley, hops, yeast and water, but I found Our Special Ale to be wonderful. Winterbrew stands out as a locally made, beautifully executed IPA well suited to colder weather and longer nights. The caramel-nut essence hangs on the roof of the mouth, as the intense, bitter and lasting finish, courtesy of generously added Cascade and Galena hops, marks the beer’s departure. Several varieties of caramel malt, plus Munich malt and Carapil’s, combine to furnish a sweet, nutty entry that blends with caramel in the mid-taste. The first sip displays Winterbrew’s complexity, and the beer’s layered intricacy is further revealed as it warms and mellows. The aroma is surprisingly malty, with caramel and nut scents holding their own against the smell of the hops. Poured from its delightful container (featuring a leaping trout), Winterbrew settles confident-looking and golden/copper beneath a lasting, tan head. Rather, it’s a rich, full-bodied India pale ale that manages to strike the delicate balance between intense flavor and comfortable drinkability. Trout Brook Winterbrew isn’t a spiced, niche brew.
